Kyra is a fighter. She is the type of woman no man would call a shrinking violet. Words, however, are her weapon of choice. She is opinionated, passionate and loud. Like her mother before her. She is also however, a lover, a woman who deep down likes to be protected. Kyra fights and loves with a passion and a zest that sometimes makes people uncomfortable, but for which her students respect.

Kyra grew up the only girl in a family of five brothers, all older than she was. Her mother Lorraine, is a police officer in the Boston Police Department. Her father, Graham, a white man, is a professor of Literature and Greek Studies at Boston University. This led to a working class kind of life, and also taught Kyra that women can be fighters as well as lovers.

At age 15, her mother was injured by a drunk driver. Kyra watched as her mother fought to return to the streets she loved, and fought everyone who told her no. Kyra was never more proud of her mother than she was a year later, when she won Officer of the Year for the Boston PD.

At 20 she entered college with a major in Administration of Justice, only to change her major a year later when she discovered her love of discussing books. Kyra dated little in college, mainly because no man could handle her rather “passionate” nature…..or her five older brothers. At 25 she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English Literature and Creative Writing. She entered the Master’s program, having decided she wanted to be a college professor. At this point, her life changed very much for the better. One year into her Master’s program she met August Henry and fell for him at first sight. They kept up a long distance relationship while she finished her Masters, and then moved to Pleasant Port to be closer to him. After a two year courtship, they married one year ago. While their relationship has its ups and downs, and she has publicly threatened to kick him to the curb, Kyra can’t imagine life without her Gus.

Lorraine Harriet Masters-Lieutenant, Boston police department. Kyra loves her mother very much, the two are very close.

Graham Alan Masters- Kyra loves her father very much also, although they are not as close as they both would like to be, she does tell her father everything that happens in her life.

Keyshawn Franklin Masters- Kyra’s oldest brother. He is a car salesman in Sarasota, She and Key are not as close as they once were, mainly because Key doesn’t like Gus.

Lamar Douglas Masters-Kyra’s second oldest brother. He is in the Army and hasn’t seen Kyra or her new husband yet.

Terrell Steven Masters-Kyra’s middle brother. He is on the police force in Boston. He likes Gus as long as he keeps making Kyra happy.

Graham Alan Masters Jr.- Kyra’s second youngest Brother, lives in San Francisco with his “life partner”. Kyra is the only member of the family he is currently speaking too.

Jeffrey Paul Masters-Kyra’s youngest brother is a missionary in Africa.

Leah Morgan Kyra has known Leah for a long time, her father often went to Boston on business and Kyra's mother was hired to do private security. Kyra considers Leah a good friend.

Asher Cohen Kyra knows Asher through his work at the community colllege. She thinks he's a nice man and talks to him often about her fers, or when she and Gus have a fight.

Julia Jenkins Kyra works with Julia at the community college, but that is the extent of thier relationship, she finds Julia to be an insufferable snob. The two women do not get along.

Collette Burns Gus' ex-wife. Kyra hates Collette with a passion only rivaled by her love for Gus. She truly does not understand her husband's need to have her in his life. She tolerates it, grudgingly, because she loves Gus, but she will not go out of her way to make the woman feel welcome.
