The Meaning of his name Malachai - Messenger of God. Dresden - People of the riverside forest.
Appearance
At his full height, Malachai stands at 5' 11" with a lean but still fairly built swimmer’s frame. Mal, as his mother often calls him, has straight long brown hair, and eyes that can’t seem to make up their mind on what color they are. Loose jeans, old school Chucks and thrift store tees (with a long-sleeved shirt underneath if it’s cold out) are what he can usually be caught in when he’s not in a work uniform.
Tattoo: A Buddha head on his upper arm. By request, the artist made it to look like a bronze statue. To achieve this, the natural skin color is kept appropriately.
Personality
In the right company, Malachai is laid-back, quite entertaining and willing to play peacemaker. He’s relatively caring and giving and tries to live his life to the absolutely fullest. He’s loud, quick-witted and a total free spirit. But just as quickly, he can seriously not give a shit about anyone but himself and be your typical, acerbically, dark-humored smartass. Although in reality, his wit, unruliness and heavy partying covers his true and deep-rooted feelings as well as his widely unknown, bruised past.
Mal is a natural-born leader and can be very vocal about his objections and believes very strongly in his own morals. Usually, he doesn't like talking about himself and or his problems but is genuine, charming and outgoing at any other type of conversation; he carries himself incredibly well. He may have a lot to hide but seemly isn’t too be affected by it. Seemly being the keyword. Though the eldest Dresden son has a mouth like a sailor, he’s also, deep-down plagued with a heart of a saint. It's tricky and dangerous to try and figure this twenty-one year old out, Malachai himself wisely never tries.
Personal History
Malachai was raised in his grandfather's trailer until he was ready for school. Then his mother got a job in Austin and settled down to let him stay in one school. He'd go to the shop with her sometimes after school while she finished her hours. In '94, she married his stepfather, Claude Dempsey. At first Claude was pretty good to him, got him into a fancy private school and moved his mom and him out of the one bedroom apartment and into an enormous house. Then... things got bad, little by little. Finally things came to a head when his mother caught Claude hitting him. He told her it was the first time it had happened. It wasn't. It didn't matter. She yanked him, his brother and their unborn sister out of Claude's clutches.
In 2001, they moved to Pleasant Port and everything changed for the better. They struggled financially for a bit, both Mal and his mom working together to keep their family afloat. Malachai mostly just kept a smile on his face and a hop in his step to show his little brother that everything was okay. He made friends through high school, enjoyed being a bit of a class clown and loved coming home to his family at the end of his day. He’d play dress up with Abby, talk world history with Toby and sit out on the porch with his mom while they each talked about their day.
By the time Malachai was eighteen, he knew that he wanted to go to college to study Herbalism as his minor and Philosophy (specifically Buddhist Studies) as his major. He finally got to do that in 2005 but the school was far from home. It was a pretty hard adjustment but Mal got through it. For over two years at school, Malachai was happy. He had a beautiful girlfriend named Holly, awesome grades in all his classes, his own apartment and a part-time job at a Auto Shop that was more of a hobby than actual work. Everything was going good.
It wasn’t until the beginning of February of ‘07, that things went south. When his apartment was vandalized and robbed, Holly (who was living with him at the time) had viciously blamed him for it, saying that all the times he sold marijuana had finally came back to bite him in the ass. Malachai knew that wasn’t the case because the only people he ever sold to were his close friends (which was more trading favors than selling) and none of them would ever do that to him. Besides they were all with him the night it happened anyway. But Holly wouldn’t listen to reason (even though two other apartments were robbed that night as well) and the couple got into a huge fight (not their first) resulting in something that never happened before; Holly repeatedly hit Malachai in a fit of rage.
It that moment, it took him back to all the times Claude had struck him. Brought back the feelings of absolute helplessness. Obviously, the two were done. She moved out that night, closely followed by Mal since their dispute had caused such a disturbance, he was kicked out of the complex. Malachai stayed with close friends until he got another place but since the break up had drudged up old memories of his abusive past, his whole being changed. His grades dropped, he stopped showing up at work due to hangovers until he finally got fired, he started getting into fights, something he never did before. Anything and everything was going wrong. Mal found himself overwhelmed and drowning and the only life-raft he knew was back in Pleasant Port, back with his family. Without much of a farewell, he dropped out of school, packed up very few things into his Impala and headed back home.

Scott Archer: Mal met Scott when he moved to town in 11th grade. They became pretty good friends in high school and remain good friends to this day. Mal considers him to be one of his best friends if not his only best friend.
Fletcher Montgomery: Malachai met Fletcher on the top of a cliff when he was 17. They dove off of it together, wild, and that was the beginning of their friendship. For almost a year, they would often go on day hikes and climbs together. Then Mal left for college. Now that he's back, Mal hopes to continue their friendship like it used to be, care-free and wild.
Josephine McConnell: Mal met Jo on the boardwalk when her energetic Jack Russell Tink got away from her and came straight for him. After only a few minutes of conversation, Malachai thinks she's one of the nicest (and shortest) people he's encountered. He also hopes he might be able to get some free ice cream out of it too.
